Salford University appoints EE engineer as visiting professor

Salford University has appointed Andy Sutton, the Principal Network Architect at mobile phone Network EE, as a visiting professor working on research projects and with students.

Professor Sutton, who has 30 years’ experience in the telecommunications industry, will be delivering up to six lectures a year as well as organising a range of placements and mentoring opportunities for Salford students on technology and computing courses.

He will also be bringing his expertise at working for one of the leading providers in the sector to constantly review course materials in this fast-developing subject and will work with academics on new research projects, collaborating with EE.

Professor Sutton got involved with the University through the Institution of Engineering and Technology at events put on with Salford to celebrate the heritage of the subject. Initial guest lectures and student placements led to this in-depth relationship which, he believes, will improve the experience of university for students.

He said: “I’m keen to enhance the learning experience for Salford students, to complement the excellent academic teaching with real-world industry experience. I’ve worked in the telecommunications industry since 1984 so it’s great to be able to share the knowledge I’ve gained over the last 30 years.

“The net product of academia and industry working together is far greater than the sum of the individual parts – it’s a very powerful combination. This industry doesn’t stand still, we’re constantly evolving; new technologies, new services and new opportunities. It’s so fast moving that industry needs to work with academia to ensure the courses are as relevant as possible to the careers the students wish to follow.

“I look forward to sharing my passion for this industry with the students.”

Professor Nigel Linge from the University’s School of Computing, Science & Engineering said: “Having Andy work with us is a real benefit for our students. He has vast experience in the industry and knows exactly what employers are looking for in graduates.

“We’re very glad he’ll be able to pass on this expertise and we’re also looking forward to working with him on some cutting-edge research.”
