Cristiano Ronaldo Needs Support If United Are to Challenge

In what looks set to be one of the most competitive Premier League title races for some time, Manchester United can’t afford to rely too heavily on Cristiano Ronaldo to take them back to the top.

While the Portuguese superstar has enjoyed a tremendous start to his second spell at Old Trafford, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will know he can’t put all his eggs in the CR7 basket.

Ronaldo Hits The Ground Running

Anyone doubting if the 36-year-old Ronaldo could still shine in the Premier League was given a quick reminder in the forward’s first game back at Old Trafford. The former Real Madrid and Juventus star bagged himself a brace against Newcastle United to truly announce his return at the Theatre of Dreams. United, who are at 21 in the English Premier League odds to win the title this season, went on to see Ronaldo continue his goalscoring form. A strike against West Ham was sandwiched between goals in the Champions League against Young Boys and Villarreal.

Others Need to Step Up

While Ronaldo is set to be a key figure for United for the remainder of the season, the Red Devils can’t afford to rely on him solely for goals. Ronaldo was started on the bench in the last game before the October international break, in a 1-1 stalemate with Everton at Old Trafford. Anthony Martial managed to get on the scoresheet against the Toffees and, even with Ronaldo coming on as a substitute, it was points dropped against Rafael Benitez’s side. The encounter before the stalemate with Everton saw United draw a blank in a surprising 1-0 defeat on home soil at the hands of Dean Smith’s Aston Villa. Once again, the worry for United backers will be that if Ronaldo does not get the goals, then the side might struggle to put a winning run together. Of course, the squad is brimming with attacking talent, with Solskjaer having the likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Edinson Cavani also at his disposal. It will be important, especially heading towards the busy festive period, that those players can contribute with match-winning goals for United.
