Planning a motorhome road trip across the UK: What you need to know

UKPlanning a motorhome road trip across the UK: What you need to know

The UK is full of incredible destinations. From the stunning Cornish beaches to the wild beauty of the Highlands, visiting places in the UK is much easier with a motorhome.

Planning a motorhome road trip is different from other kinds of staycation as there are other considerations for you to think about. Here is a guide to planning a UK road trip with a motorhome.

Selecting your route and destination

The ideal UK holiday looks very different for different people. Some prefer to explore the natural wonders of the Lake District whereas others prefer to relax on the beaches of the south coast. Before you set off on your epic road trip, think about what you want to get from the holiday.

If you don’t want to stay in one place for too long, why not embark on a multi-stop road trip? The North Coast 500 in Scotland and the Atlantic Highway across the South-West of England are popular choices which showcase the best that the area has to offer.

Preparing your motorhome

Perhaps one of the most important things to do before you travel is to check your motorhome insurance is up to date. Not only is this a legal requirement, but having insurance will protect you financially.

Next, make sure your vehicle is in good working order. You could book it in for a service but there are aspects you can do yourself such as checking the tyres, fluid levels and completing a visual inspection.

You should also take some time to go over your emergency supplies. Items such as tools, first aid kits and spare parts should be kept at a reasonable level to prevent emergencies.

Planning overnight stops and campsites

If you are planning to stay in different places overnight, motorhoming allows you to do things differently. Most campsites will have spaces available for motorhomes, but these do get booked up quickly in busier periods so it is better to book as much in advance as you can. For finding motorhome-friendly sites, utilise websites such as the Caravan and Motorhome Club.

Wild camping is also an option in Scotland but remember things will be different. If you need the bathroom, it will be outdoors so take appropriate measures to preserve the local area and not leave human waste behind. A general rule for wild camping is to be respectful, so take any rubbish with you and leave the area as you find it.

Ensuring safety and security

As with all forms of accommodation, whilst you are travelling, you must keep your belongings safe. Your motorhome is lockable but remember to keep any valuables secured away if you are heading out on an adventure.

Keeping safe whilst driving is important too. If you feel tired when driving, be sure to stop off for a break and not just power through. Stick to speed limits and make sure you are constantly aware of other road users.
